Plumber, 20, jumps to his death from 19th floor
A 20-year-old plumber died after jumping off a 19-story building in Barangay Tejero, Cebu City on Tuesday morning, May 18, 2021.
Police identified him as Emilio Laraga Mapalo Jr., from San Francisco City, Camotes Islands, Cebu.
Police Major Edgar Labe, head of the Cebu City waterfront police station, said the incident took place in a Tejero apartment building under construction.
Labe said that, according to Noel Luchavez, one of the site’s leading foremen, colleagues had noted that Mapalo was standing by the ledge where he was working.
Luchavez told police they were trying to warn Mapalo not to stay where he worked or he would fall.
When one of their colleagues approached Mapalo to talk to him, Mapalo ran to the ledge and jumped. He died instantly.
Labe said that, according to witnesses in the area, Mapalo had problems at work and in his personal life.
One of the Mapalo employees told the police that Mapalo was often not herself and often did not want to work.
Police found no signs of foul play in Mapalo’s death, Labe said.
They also found his cell phone, which contained a text message to his aunt saying he was ready to kill himself.
