NWFA completes 58th R.I.S.E home

RISESt. Louis, Miss.—The National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) provided flooring for its 58th home in support of the Gary Sinise Foundation’s RISE (Restoring Independence Supporting Empowerment) program. The RISE program builds custom, purpose-built smart homes for critically injured veterans and first responders.

The dedication of the home for US Army First Sergeant (Ret.) Jarrid “Jay” Collins took place on August 5 in Odessa, Florida. According to the company, the flooring for the project was donated by NWFA member Mannington. As a green beret, Collins was deployed to Afghanistan, Iraq and twice to South America. While serving in Afghanistan in 2007, Collins was shot in the arm, continued to fight, and later assisted in performing an operation on himself on the battlefield. He returned to full combat operations after only 30 days of recovery.

A few months later, he suffered serious leg injuries. Collins overcame these injuries to be selected for the U.S. Army’s Special Operations Command, but ultimately had to have his leg amputated due to the severity of his condition. Following his amputation, Collins reclassified as a fully deployable green beret and served on active duty for another five years.

“First Sergeant Collins is a highly decorated Army Special Forces veteran and Purple Heart recipient with more than two decades of service,” said Michael Martin, NWFA president and CEO. “His dedication to serving our country is admirable, as is his commitment to not letting his injuries dictate his path. We are honored to partner with Mannington to deliver beautiful wood floors for his new home.”

In addition to the 58 homes already completed, NWFA said it is currently working with its members to purchase wood floors for 14 additional RISE homes in various stages of planning and construction. Currently, 143 NWFA member companies have donated product, logistics and installation services at locations across the United States, worth a total of more than $5.7 million, the company said.
