Local roofing company donates time and supplies to Bryan ISD CTE students
President Rayne Knight says they were able to bring one of the largest manufacturing companies in the country to help with the lesson.
“We have in Carlisle Manufacturing Company to bring in materials and their technical reps to teach the kids a real roofing installation,” Knight said.
Knight says that along with the installation, they talked to students about long-term employment and growth within the profession.
“We can show them how to start in the field. What they’re going to learn from the bottom, but we can also show them where they can get and what kind of money they can make at the top,” Knight said.
Students like Miguel Martinez say the hands-on experience is what he likes about the program.
“I never thought construction would be my thing until I came to this program. I actually started to like it because I got so much experience,” said Martinez.
Architecture teacher, John Templeton, says the goal is to get students excited about the possibilities after graduation.
“They can kind of dive deep in these areas. They can study them and see everything that goes into these building processes,” says Templeton. “This way they can decide for themselves in which sector or how they want to continue their training in construction.”
Knight says they are willing to offer opportunities to the students if they are interested.
“I see a lot of those who may want to pursue this and I’m also getting a lot of names so we can figure out who will be available for an internship and permanent position,” Knight said.
