“Just because they have a website that shows these valuable services, that doesn’t mean they are good,” Montagna said. “You have to ask around – I don’t think people are doing enough.”
That said, not every project around the house needs a contractor. It depends on the project, he said.
“If you’re looking for a pressure washer, as long as the pressure washer has five different heads on the washer and knows what you’re going to use, you’re fine,” Montagna said. “If you need someone to clear the garage or mow the lawn, whatever you want to pay them, it’s between you two. But if you are building a balcony, you may want to take someone with you who knows what they are doing so it illuminates it properly so that you do not get water running down the side of your house.
“It depends on the project – pressure wasting is one thing, and building a balcony is something different.”
Montagna relies on some old adage as the last word of caution: “If it seems good to be true, it usually is; Cheap does not always mean better. ”
