The Home Improvement Senior Citizen program seems to have a big impact on the community.

Although the Housing Committee did not meet during Monday’s City Council session due to the emergency 2023 budget meeting, the City Council discussed the successful implementation of the Senior Home Improvement Program.

During the November voting session, the City Council awarded an additional $500,000 under the U.S. Emergency Plan Act to the Senior Citizen Home Improvement Incentive Program. By allocating an additional $500,000 in ARPA funding, the City Council was able to increase the total senior home improvement program allocation to $1.5 million.

Additional funding was provided to cover the remaining projects of approved applicants, which were put on hold until additional funds were made available by the City Council.

Last week, Mayor Eddie Sundquist told City Council members that letters had been sent to each of the approved applicants, informing them that additional funds had been made available through the Senior Home Improvement Program.

“I believe that everyone who has been approved should have received the letters sent last week and should have received them by now.” Housing Commission Chair Marie Carrubba, D-Ward IV, said during a meeting this week. “I have a list of all the properties and I believe at least 193 residents have been approved for senior or elderly approval funds.”

Carrubba said credit goes to everyone involved in the retirement home improvement project, including staff at the Development Department, City Council and Lisa Volpe’s office.

“Of course it’s good news to think that 193 residents are getting help with various projects that can help, including a wheelchair ramp for someone very near and dear to me in terms of accessibility,” she said.

City Councilor Kim Ecklund, R-At Large, asked the city administration if the process of reimbursing residents under the Senior Home Improvement Program has begun. Sundquist explained that the reimbursement process is ongoing and that some projects have already been completed.

“We’ve received some great cards from some people that needed very minor tweaks but really changed their lives,” he said. “It’s a really great show.”

The City Council has made the Home Improvement Senior Incentive Program a top priority over the past few months, given the program’s success and popularity with Jamestown residents. Having fully funded the program last month, council members were pleased with the program’s performance.
