Continental Invests $110M In Texas ADAS Facility

Technology company Continental is making progress with construction of a new state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Texas. Upon completion, the New Braunfels, Texas plant will produce products for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) – the foundation of assisted and automated driving. The facility is a long-term investment of approximately $110 million (approximately €100 million) in the future of mobility and the New Braunfels community.

Construction is now underway to develop the 215,000-square-foot facility. Work is expected to start in the second half of 2022.

“Promoting growth and innovation in ADAS technology is essential in building cars for the future,” said Samir Salman, CEO, Continental North America. “At Continental, we are always looking for new opportunities to make drivers safer to support our goal of zero fatalities, injuries and accidents. More than ever, drivers want access to new technologies because it makes them and their passengers safer. This new facility allows us to continue to grow and improve as we build the next generation of mobility in Texas.”

Continental develops key components for assisted and automated driving around the world. With this new location, the company is positioned to expand its R&D and manufacturing capabilities in the United States. This is especially important as the demand for intelligent safety features continues to grow.

Recognizing the potential impact, Continental began exploring sensors, software and intelligent connectivity more than 20 years ago. The New Braunfels facility is an extension of that work as the company will invest more in assisted and automated driving. When the plant opens, local workers will produce radar sensors, which are essential for many advanced safety functions, such as blind spot detection and collision warning.

“The growth in automated and assisted driving is exciting as we make travel safer and more efficient,” said Ryan French, Focus Factory manager, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, Continental North America. “The state-of-the-art facility allows us to advance the technology even further to develop products that meet people’s future needs. The City of New Braunfels, Comal County, New Braunfels Utilities, Greater New Braunfels Chamber of Commerce of Commerce and the New Braunfels Economic Development Committee have all been great partners.”

Continental and Texas have had a long successful partnership. This will be the company’s second auto plant in the state. With this new location, Continental will provide 580 high-paying jobs with excellent benefits in New Braunfels over the next four years.

“We are excited to see Continental grow here,” said Rusty Brockman, Mayor of New Braunfels. “German heritage and craftsmanship, along with Texas pride, was the perfect trifecta needed to bring Continental Automotive to New Braunfels.”

Continental is a global leader in ADAS development and is one of the world’s largest automotive and technology suppliers. Since 2011, Continental has invested approximately $3.5 billion in manufacturing, technology, facilities and product development in the United States. It has a domestic workforce of over 19,000.
