Case Study: Upgrading an Elementary School’s Aging Heating System

The Edmund Hatch Bennett Elementary School, a K-4 public school in Taunton, Massachusetts, was built in the 1960s with several upgrades and renovations over the past 40 years. However, an outdated heating system, including wall units and cabinet heaters that were original to the building, needed updating. The installation of modern, energy-efficient heating systems from Marley Engineered Products helped the school achieve the grade.
“Edmund Hatch staff sought help optimizing their supplemental heating system,” said Matt Goodrich, sales representative at Goodyear Electric Sales. “Understanding that clean air quality and filtration are critical in these times, a building’s HVAC system should be periodically examined and updated for the safety and comfort of students, faculty and staff.”
After assessing current equipment, Goodrich recommended two of the latest energy efficient technology from Marley Engineered Products: the CU900 Series Custom Cabinet Unit Heater (CUH), which provides extra comfort heat and is easy to install and maintain, and the Qmark Architectural Heavy – Duty Wall Heater (AWH) series with a contemporary design and powerful output to heat any room or open space.
“We knew the improved heating equipment was essential not only to improve air quality, but also to heat the school more efficiently,” said Brenda Moynihan, MCPPO, Assistant Superintendent for Finance & Operations, Taunton Public Schools. “We were very excited to move forward with this project, along with the support from the City of Taunton.”
The installation team that oversaw the project, Equipment Direct Sales, Inc. (EDSI), of Randolph, Massachusetts, faced challenges along the way. The size of the wall openings for the wall heaters was a concern as there was no budget available to demonstrate the concrete openings to fit a unit of similar size to the original output. However, by using the latest AHW series, the contractors were able to make the unit smaller while still maintaining the original heating performance, making installation much easier.
Before replacing the CUH, the installation team matched the dimensions of the original units almost exactly, resulting in lower installation costs.
“Using the latest technology from Marley Engineered Products, we were able to replace the existing wall and cabinet heaters with modern energy efficient products that are sure to benefit the school,” said Steve Clark, project manager at EDSI.
By replacing the original wall and cabinet heaters with modern energy efficient heaters, the school has fewer units in use, while still maintaining a comfortable environment, resulting in utility savings. They also experience the air effects of new units and filters, which help filter and eliminate bacteria and other contaminants in the air.
