In fact, fewer people completing home improvement projects in the winter months can mean less competition for both top local contractors and materials. This could mean you can save money or at least complete your renovation faster than during the busier months of the year.
Of course, you want to make sure your winter home improvement project is a good investment that pays for itself. In fact, there’s plenty to choose from, guaranteeing you won’t get cabin fever this season.

Insulate Your Attic

Replace Windows and Doors

Install a Heat Pump
Worried about your electric bill during the winter months? Crowley suggested installing a heat pump.
“Heat pumps are a great way to supplement your existing heating system and increase the efficiency of your home,” he said. “They use electricity to draw heat from the outside and transfer it inside, which can help reduce your energy bills.”
Despite the name, your heat pump will also serve as an energy-efficient way to keep your house cooler on a budget during the warmer months.
Seal Air Leaks
Average cost: $270 per weather stripping project
If your home is drafty, Crowley recommends finding air leaks and sealing them.
“Sealing air leaks around windows and doors can help keep the warm air inside your home and the cold air outside,” he said. “This is a relatively simple and inexpensive project that can save you on energy costs.”
Caulking and weatherstripping are two simple and effective options that provide a quick return on investment, according to the Department of Energy. In general, caulk is typically used to seal cracks and openings between stationary components – such as door and window frames – while weatherstripping is best for components that move – such as doors and windows in use.

Install Solar Panels
It’s a high investment, but installing solar panels can provide serious returns. An average system can lower your monthly electric bill by up to 50%.
Additionally, you may be eligible for a 30% tax credit for the installation of your solar panels under the federal solar energy credit. Because potential buyers also welcome the extra savings, solar panels can also increase the value of your home, according to the Department of Energy.
